WSF 2024 in Nepal, After 20- Years in Asia:

 

The World Social Forum(WSF) is a largest platform of social movements, civil society organizations and social activists at a global level. The prime objective is to discuss and share ideas, experiences and practices alternative to the hegemonic globalization, neo-liberal capitalism, corporatization and market fundamentalism and political authoritarianism. It promotes solidarity, networking and finding common solutions to global challenges. The first WSF was organized in Porto Alegre, Brazil under the banner of ‘Another World is Possible’. In Asia, the fourth WSF was held in 2004 in India. Now, two decades later, the WSF 2024 is being hosted in Nepal, also located in Asia, and is scheduled to be held from 15th to 19th February 2024. The opening ceremony is scheduled on the 15th of February followed by numerous parallel sessions on 16-18 February and the closing ceremony will be held on 19 February 2024.

 

WSF 2024 NEPAL PREPARATORY PROCESS:

For the preparations of WSF 2024 Nepal, multiple preparatory meetings have been for the preparations of WSF 2024 Nepal, multiple preparatory meetings have been conducted with the formation of the Nepal General Council (NGC) and Nepal Organizing Committee (NOC). The NGC encompasses more than five hundred member organizations. To make the preparatory process more efficient a number of subcommittees are working under the NOC. Meanwhile, the 2 days (13 & 14 February) Intercontinental Youth Forum will also be organized.

 

Themes of WSF 2024:

The broader themes proposed are:

1.  Economic Inequality and Economic Justice  

2.  Labour, Migration, Modern Slavery and Trafficking

3.  Caste, Discrimination based on Work and Descent (DWD), Race, Ethnicity,Indigenous People, Untouchability, Xenophobia, and all forms of Discrimination

4.  Gender, Sexuality, Identities and Gender-based Violence

5.  Land, Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, Energy and Natural Resources 

6.  Peace, Conflict, War, Occupations, Displacements, and Security

7.  Education, Art and Culture 

8.  Communication, Social Networks and Media (Digital Equality)

9.  Democracy, Human Rights, Authoritarianism, Law, and Justice

10. Health, Social Protection and Equity

11. Climate Justice, Ecology, Just Transitions, Habitat, and Sustainable Development

12. Women, Children, Youth, Adolescents, Aging people and Persons with Disabilities

13. Social Movements, Civic Space and the Future of the World Social Forum

14. Any other not mentioned above

Nevertheless, the themes are not restrictive, and additional themes can be included based on their relevance to the World Social Forum (WSF).

 

PROGRESS ON PREPARATORY PROCESS:

Several sub-committees are actively engaged in various tasks such as logistical management, program development, liaising with different stakeholders, including the government, mobilization efforts, developing communication strategies, and resource mobilization, among others. National preparations have commenced in multiple countries, including Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, and many others. The National Organizing Committee (NOC) is taking stock of social movements and organizations that will be providing support and participating in WSF2024. The respective sub-committees under the NOC are on-board to facilitate all the domestic and International participants and delegates in the participation process right from the stage of registration to the time of event and beyond.
