Welcome to  WSF2024 thematic session activity focused on one of the umbrella theme of WSF2024  Communication, Digital Social Networks, Media, and Digital Equity,  ( theme 8 in  https://wsf2024nepal.org/theme )

This activity, with unconference format,  will provide a dynamic platform for open discussions, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among WSF participants passionate about democratizing access to information, fostering democratic debate spaces, and advocating for communication rights in the digital age.

You will be ushered in a whatsapp group  Participating in Act314WSF2024  where there can be interaction with some one present in the tent during the session ( see remote participation) 

The activity prepared by a group of WSF participant  organizations, formed through public meetings in TCS12 thematic connection spaces focused on this them,  has an unconfence  format. If you have expertise or experience to share in these areas, we invite you to register through our Google Form to be part of the speaker/contributors lineup.

8. Communication, Digital Social Networks, and Media (Digital Equity)

This WSF2024 umbrella theme welcomes activities and initiatives of action by those movements and organizations struggling technically, socially, and politically for: free access to emancipatory information; the development of knowledge and software as commons; democratic debate spaces; media regulation; communication rights; and a democratic Internet.

In 2024, a large majority of the world's population will have a smartphone and be connected several hours a day to corporate digital social networks and the digital flow of media. What individuals, especially young people access online is based on algorithms which are driven by profit. This has deep implications on how they get information to competing narratives about the state of the world and imagine and concretize collective possibilities to take their lives into their own hands.

The Internet is in dispute between being a powerful tool for individual and collective emancipation endeavors, supported by progressive public policies where they may exist, and being a means in the hands of neoliberal-compatible power groups for permanent surveillance on individuals and for influence, through basic or negative emotions, on their attention, narratives, and imaginaries.

Developing intercommunication online around the theme communication digital social network and media

1/ We  undersigned organizations,  active in the field of communication,  social digital networks  and media, are considering ourselves “participants in WSF”  ( world social forum) and or  APSF ( asia pacific social forum) processes, 

We understand  that  social forums,  such as WSF or APSF  are intercommunication processes  (between CSOs sharing certain  generic goals and values  described  in WSF charter ) . 

These processes are held in an open space that CSOs join, accepting those WSF principles. These open spaces are  developed and  maintained,  politically and logistically, by  a collective effort of facilitation for the corresponding  process.
 We  are interested to develop practices consisting in using the corporate digital  networks  for  maintaining  some clearly identified , and, inasmuch possible  safe,  "online open spaces", where to stay connected  through proposing online activities adn sharing their “news from the forum space”  

2/ In this perspective we support the preparation and holding of Follow up thematic sessions  Communication, Digital Social Networks, Media, and Digital Equity   Activity 314
These online two hour sessions would be organized before mid 2024, as a  follow up after the physical Thematic session held in WSF2024 on 18th February  (Activity 314 described here https://wsf2024nepal.org/activity/314) . 
They would  be organized by an inclusive group of CSOs  starting from the group  that organized the first session on occasion of WSF2024 event

The purpose of these sessions would be  to  continue the “unconference” format focusing contributions on : 
-the  documentation and follow up of some activities held in WSF2024 related to TCS12- Theme 8 , 
-proposing new  self organized activities focussing on topics related to the role of media,  social networks,  and communication in the efforts to develop communication for peace development  control of communities and nations on their communication for another possible world etc  

3/ In relation with these follow up sessions,  we intend to be present  and interact  throughout 2024 in a social media  group “participants in Act 314 and beyond”, and in the TCS12-T8  thematic connection space provided in the context of WSF2024
