Palestine Under Siege in the Nexus of Politics and Religious Rhetoric

In October 7th. 2023, the situation in Palestine and Israel has engaged in a new phase, particularly violent and destructive, especially in Gaza. From a bloody attack against Israeli civilians by people from Hamas, a colossal war machine has been deployed to turn Gaza in rumbles, and to erase the Palestinian presence and bodies from there. Violence also impacts the West Bank, with an increase of settler violence. In addition to material warfare, religion is mobilized as a rhetoric, a narrative to normalize war crimes.

This panel will discuss these questions from a social-political, and religious studies perspective.

Panelists:

  • Mitri Raheb, a renowned figure in Palestinian liberation theology, is the first president of Dar-al-Kalima University, in Bethlehem. He served as the pastor of the Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem from 1987 until 2017. He was the President of the Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land from 2011-2016.
  • Varsen Aghabekian, an expert in right-based community practice (RBCP), has been engaged in several NGOs working in policy development, on matters of Al-Quds/Jerusalem, education, youth, women and management. 2024 Kathmandu World Social Forum (WSF)

Statement of the World Forum on Theology and Liberation (WFTL)

We, the 40 members of WFTL engaging on the theme of Politics and Religion from the Perspective of Liberation and Care, from 13 to 19 February 2024, make the following assertions:

  • We oppose a Zionist reading of the Bible utilized as software in justifying the Israeli settler colonization of Palestine, going on for decades, that is producing the current and inhuman genocide of Palestine in Gaza and the West Bank. In a liberation perspective, we take Gaza as a key of theological interpretation, a turning point that will leave a mark on the articulation of the knowledge of God and its implications for life in the world today.

  • We affirm the right of the indigenous people and feminist across the globe to express their faith and religious practices autonomously, using their own sociocultural traditions and belief systems. In this we condemn the colonial impositions of the Christian churches worldwide that have destroyed the spiritual agency of the indigenous people. We express solidarity with the resistance of indigenous people in asserting and reclaiming their indigenous and Christian identity.

  • We denounce the unholy nexus between politics and religion that is becoming widely pervasive in the construction of religious nationalism in the different parts of the world. From the perspective of liberation and care, we assert the rights of minorities, honoring the diversities of religions and cultures, and different expressions of democracy that should mark the social fabric of any given society.
